John 19:34 “But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a lance, and instantly there came out blood and water.”

What was redeemed: wholeness of heart and fullness of joy.
The Roman flogging or scourging that Jesus endured was brutal - The whip that was used, called a flagrum, consisted of braided leather thongs with metal balls and pieces of sharp bone woven into or intertwined with the braids. The balls added weight to the whip, causing deep bruising and the pieces of bone cut into the flesh. As the beating continued, the resulting cuts were so severe that the skeletal muscles, underlying veins, sinews, and bowels of victims were exposed. This beating was so severe that at times victims would not survive it and did not go on to be crucified.
Those who were flogged would often go into hypovolemic shock, a term that refers to low blood volume. In other words, the person would have lost so much blood he would go into shock. The results of this would be
1) The heart would race to pump blood that was not there.
2) The victim would collapse or faint due to low blood pressure.
3) The kidneys would shut down to preserve body fluids.
4) The person would experience extreme thirst as the body desired to replenish lost fluids.
There is evidence from Scripture that Jesus experienced hypovolemic shock as a result of being flogged. As Jesus carried His own cross to Golgotha He collapsed, and a man named Simon was forced to either carry the cross or help Jesus carry the cross the rest of way to the hill  -This collapse indicates Jesus had low blood pressure. Another indicator that Jesus suffered from hypovolemic shock was that He declared He was thirsty as He hung on the cross. The sustained rapid heartbeat caused by hypovolemic shock also causes fluid to gather in the sack around the heart and around the lungs.  This explains why, after Jesus died and a Roman soldier thrust a spear through Jesus’ side, piercing both the lungs and the heart, blood and water came from His side just as John recorded.
While studying Exodus, the Holy Spirit gave me great Revelation, referring to Jesus as the Rock, and the cleft being the wounded side of Christ on the Cross- I can almost physically feel Him pulling me close to His side!
Exodus 33:18-23 (NIV) 18 Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.”19 And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.”
21 Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”
But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. John 19:34
The spear was thrust through Jesus' side, showing that he died from a broken heart, to heal my broken  heart.
Luke 4:18, Isaiah 61 Psalm 147:3 3 He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds
Jesus literally bled out for us and emptied Himself on the cross to wash away the sins, iniquities, trespasses, transgressions and sicknesses of mankind. His heart was broken for us that He might heal our broken heart! Jesus bled to mend us both mentally and emotionally by binding up our broken hearts.
Our hearts have been washed clean of guilt and shame so that we can be filled with joy and gladness resulting in praise and worship for Him who died and rose again on our behalf. When we believe by faith to receive His mercy and surrender our life to Jesus the blood flows supernaturally to cleanse us of all sin.
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to those who are bound. Isaiah 61:1

Jesus went through great heartbreak right from the moment He entered into Jerusalem. First, He was rejected and betrayed by Judas, then the crowd before Pilate also rejected Him, choosing Barnabas to be given to them, then He saw His mother watch Him while naked on the cross, then He felt abandoned by the Father too when He cried, ‘My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?’ Betrayal, grief, abandonment, rejection… these are things which gripped the heart of the Master and caused Him pain even as He hung on the cross. It was not easy. It is medically proven that a high level of agony can cause water to collect around the heart.
When Jesus died, the soldiers did not pierce His heart, only His side. But when they did, blood and water came out, showing that he literally died of a broken heart. When Jesus first begun His ministry, He said God has sent Him to ‘heal the broken-hearted’. So beloved, the enemy may have done many things to crush your heart and will to live, you may have gone through torturous things at the hands of men, but when we come to Jesus, broken hearts are made new again.’. No matter  what has been done to  you by anyone to break your heart, the heart of Jesus was broken so that yours can be made whole again. Broken not by the spear, but by the anguish, and the blood that came from there was to make your heart whole again. You can have a brand new heart, You can have your joy restored again. No more sad, gloomy and depressed days, for joy has been paid for with the highest of cost!
 Hallelujah!
